THE SPRIG HAS ROOTS

A sprig plant

After a long day, two friends; let's call them Jenny and Kim, decided to go to Jenny's house and enjoy the backyard. It is full of wide open space, lush green grass as far as the eye can see because Jenny's house is a ranch sitting on land with the rolling hills behind the house.

However, the land was just that; land! Land, as far as the eye can see. Not one shrub, flower, plant or tree in sight. Just grass! Seeing how beautiful the landscape would look with some more plants, Kim suggested that Jenny should plant something. Jenny, knowing that the land would be even nicer with something growing agreed with Kim, and let Kim take over and plant what she thinks best. Only one problem, Jenny completely forgot that Kim has no idea how to plant anything! Kim lacked a serious green thumb to grow something substantial enough to handle the wide & open plain Jenny lived on.

Open and grassy plain with one tree

Knowing her serious lack of green-thumb skills, Kim decided to ask for the opinion of a florist and grabbed the first thing the florist suggested, hoping that the plant will grow well.

With only the basics of how to grow the plant, she planted the plant in the backyard; smack dab in the middle of Jenny's backyard.

After tenderly taking care of it for a few weeks, Jenny noticed that there were seemingly no evidences of growth. She assumed that maybe she just needed to be a little bit more patient, and she would see growth in a few weeks more. Months flew by, and still there was no sign that anything was growing.

"What is going on with this plant?! Why isn't this thing growing?!" Jenny exclaimed. "I have watered you, fed you, sheltered you from the elements when a few major rainstorms happened, and not to mention I kept you safe when my dog Bilbo wanted to dig a hole here! After all that I have done to take care of you why are you growing!?!?"

Annoyed and exhausted from working on taking care of the plant every day non-stop, she called her friend Kim to find out just what she had planted in her yard and what she needs to do to get it to grow. Kim told Jenny that she just took what the florist gave her in excitement and didn't really know what she gave to her, and would try to find out what she did get, and tell her as soon as she finds out herself.

Kim went back to the florist shop only to find that the place she went to was not a florist shop, but a gardener location specializing in growing large plants, trees and things of the like - - not flowers.

Out of all of the plants in the store, none of them matched what the man gave her. When she described the man's appearance to the owner, he said he didn't recognize him nor did he have any hires at the time she bought the plant. Confused, she asked the owner if he could follow her to her friend's house and take a look at the plant. He agreed and came over.

Sliced Mango

Jenny, having been disappointed with the lack of anything growing left the plant alone to fend for itself and hadn't been in the backyard since her meltdown. When she received the phone call from Kim, she said it's okay for the gardener to come over even though she didn't know how he would recognize anything with just dirt on the ground.

Kim and the gardener came to Jenny's backyard and to Jenny's surprise, there was a giant sprig coming out of the ground!

Jenny looked at the sprig, absolutely surprised at how something actually grew when it seemed nothing would grow. Surprised at the plant's growth, Jenny asked the gardener what this plant was.

"It's a Mango tree! These trees take a long time to grow because they have extensive root systems. Though it looks like nothing is happening, there is a lot of action under the ground to support the size it'll be later. Now that the tree is growing, do these steps and it will grow to be a very big tree that bears some serious fruit in time to come."

Amazed, Jenny took the gardener's advice and both Jenny and Kim enjoyed the tree and it's fruits for many years afterwards. There was even so much fruit, that she started a new initiative to grow fruit trees in impoverished neighborhoods so students are prepared for school in the morning.

It is amazing, when nothingness is actually full of potential and change.

Tree with large exposed root system

The main point of this story, is to know that when things, people, situations or something else looks like barely anything is happening; understand that much is going on beneath the surface.

Do NOT be bought in to the lack of immediate desired manifestation when you first begin, because first beginnings lead to great endings.

  • If that person seems like they will never change, pray, decree, declare and be patient.

  • If that situation seems like it won't ever change; pray, decree, declare and be patient.

  • If that place or something seems like it won't ever change; pray, decree, declare and be patient.

  • In all things, do not be bought into the things or voices that makes it seem like things will never change or grow.

When planted in the right environment, when given the nutrients it needs, when given tender care, when protected from harm; the sprig, will sprout, and become a deeply rooted and large fruit-bearing tree!
